Hi everyone,
I have been reading the forum for months to plan our visit to Siem Reap. We will see the usual sights, but wanted to take one day out in the countryside.
We are visiting around mid April. My thought was to visit Kompong Khleang. I read it was amazing in the dry months. I think it is a bit far, but should be doable in one day.
Chong Khneas sounds like a tourist trap, and most posters weren%26#39;t recommending it. Kompong Phluck lookds interesting, but it sounds as though it might be difficult to get to in the dry season.
Finally, do most tourists take malaria tablets? I seem to be getting mixed reviews on the forum.
Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions you might have.
Outside of Siem Reap for a day
Maybe you could spend the day going to Koh Ker, you certainly pass a lot of countryside on the way there and back, but if you are templed out then I maybe a trip to Kulen mountain would be good, go and have a picnic by the waterfall under the cool shady trees, you can combine that with a visit to Beng melea or kbahl speen if you haven%26#39;t seen enough laterite!
Kampong khleang is certainly the best option for a lake visit although the water will be low in april, but the bird santuary is close and worth a look.
As for malaria tabs, I did, but now I don%26#39;t, dengue seems more of a problem and so repellent is the most essential item imho

Driver1-
Do you have Banteay Srei, Beng Mealea and Kbal Spean on your itinerary? Those are great for getting out of the Angkor Temple complex, and it will take up the better part of a day...
I spend 1-2 months per year in Southeast Asia and have never taken malaria medication. Covering your bod and using a decent mosquito repellent is absolutely necessary, though.
Hi Driver 1 you should follow
Maneki-neko - Cheer
both kompong phluk and prek toal are accessable all year round if you go by boat, you will pass through chong kneas which is also very interesting as its a floating village of some 6000 people
