I%26#39;m doing 2 weeks in vietnam and cambodia. Vietnam I%26#39;m doing on my own because I can%26#39;t find any tours that do stops in dalat.
So I plan on doing the intrepid classic cambodia tour, which does 6 days in phnom penh and siem reap for $1100.

The first day and last day of the tour are more or less travel days, and that seems like a lot of money for 4 days of a tour. That seems like an awful lot of money to me. Has anyone done it before, and do you think it%26#39;s worth it? I%26#39;d like to do a tour group as much as possible on my two weeks, mainly so things don%26#39;t get too lonely, or so I won%26#39;t have to keep on going through the same routine of meeting people each day.
price of intrepid tour worth it?
personally, not worth the money, esp if you are able/like travelling solo - as you are in vietnam.
i worked out that when i first wanted to go - and looked at such a tour, it would be cheaper for me to pay for my friend to come with me, than it was to go on my own with intrepid/other tours.
you%26#39;ll get plenty of advice on here, and other forums, and you should meet plenty of other solo travellers too. If, you dont want to travel by yourself all the tiem, have a look at the tours www.peaceofangkor.com offer - not as cheap as doing it yourself, but still cheaper
price of intrepid tour worth it?
Let%26#39;s do some calculating.
Hotel 5 nights x $50 per night- $250 (could do it much cheaper) Breakfast would be included in most 3 star hotels.
flight from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap $80 ( you could take a $12 bus and many actually prefer it)
temple passes 3 days $40
admission to sites in Phnom Penh $30?
Land mine Museum $1
transportation (tuk tuk in PP) $25?
transportation (private car in Siem Reap) $100
private guide in Siem Reap $100
2 dinners (included in their itnerary) $20
Hotel transfers probably free, but we%26#39;ll say $15
Total $661 and that%26#39;s on the high side I%26#39;d say.
What else is included in Intrepid%26#39;s price that I%26#39;m not thinking about?
And what%26#39;s up with compulsory travel insurance....how much does that add to the bill?
BTW if you%26#39;re worried about getting lonely on the road, opt to stay in a good guesthouse, especially in Siem Reap- I promise you%26#39;ll meet people.
I was thinking it would be about twice as expensive as on my own, although I understand that intrepid needs to make their money. It just surprises me because usually it%26#39;s not as much of a mark up.
That is just about my only concern/want --to do the tour and stay with the same crowd for a few days. The other parts of my trip in vietnam involve day tours/ two day tours that are fractions of the cost.
I think I%26#39;m going to pass on the tour. I might try and find one cheaper, but wouldn%26#39;t be against just doing day trips to both cities since I don%26#39;t plan on doing much there aside the standard tourist traps.
I%26#39;m sure I%26#39;ll be back for more questions as I start planning. Thanks for the quick help!
Why don%26#39;t you price an Intrepid Basix tour for Cambodia. it still includes transport and accommodation but not as many meals and entrance fees but in these countries food is quite cheap and you have more flexibility. Mu husband and I did Intrepid Basix Vietnam in June this year and it was fantastic not at all basic but well worth the price. 21 days for under $900 AUS. Everything was very cheap. I also visited Dalat last year and it was a great experience.
2 weeks is not much time for both countries. We spent 5 weeks this year in Vietnam alone! Hoi An is a great place not to miss.
Have a great trip!
I%26#39;m thinking of going on an Intrepid Tour but I am a bit worried that people on the trip will think I am too old. I am 49 and a single woman - what do you think?
I went on an Intrepid tour last year, to Vietnam and Cambodia, and our group was made up of four aussies (2 parents in their 50%26#39;s and 2 kids in their early 20%26#39;s), two canadians (in their late 50%26#39;s) and me and my friend (late 20%26#39;s and early 30%26#39;s). We all had a great time together and there was never a problem. So I wouldn%26#39;t let your age stop you!
For EDG126 - Intrepid is good, but the Vietnam portion of our trip was way better, IMO, than the Cambodia piece. You can easily do Phnom Pehn and Siem Reap on your own. You may want a guide in Angkor Wat but I%26#39;m sure you could hire one for the day or two that you%26#39;re there.
